On 12 December 2023, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) issued a consultation on proposals to develop arrangements whereby the DCC can communicate via the internet and consumer broadband with Smart Metering Systems installed in premises that do not have a connection via the SMWAN. The consultation document, which outlines the details and proposals, can be accessed here.

All SEC Parties interested in providing input and feedback on these proposals are encouraged to submit their responses before 5pm on 15 January 2024 to: smartmetering@energysecurity.gov.uk.

The consultation document provides more detail on how to respond. Should you have any questions or require further clarification regarding the consultation, please contact the email address provided above.

A reference is given in the consultation to an industry workshop that is to be held in Q1 2024.

The workshop is intended provide general feedback on the responses received and to explore the costs and benefits in more detail, prior to DESNZ publishing a formal Government Response which will include a decision on whether to proceed in development of the underlying technical solution.

TBDG, as the forum where changes to the design baseline instigated by transitional governance are considered, will be used to assist DESNZ in coming to its conclusion. Members will be asked to consider the case for change and provide views. However, other interested parties are also welcome to attend the workshop event.

The Workshop is being scheduled for two hours via a MS Teams call, but we may not require all that time.

If you would like to attend, then please contact the DESNZ SMIP team on the email address above to request an invite. Details and Agenda will follow before the event.
