DESNZ has today, 11 June 2026, published a consultation document seeking views on proposed changes to the Virtual WAN Transition Document to provide suppliers with an option to elect to have 4G communications with Virtual WAN Communications Hubs operating on soft-launch firmware to be temporarily disabled such that the devices are forced to use an internet connection.

As explained in the consultation, 4G communications with these devices would subsequently be restored.

The consultation document can be found here and the associated drafting changes to the Virtual WAN Transition Document can be found here.

Responses to the questions set out in the consultation (and associated reasons) should be submitted to smartmetering@energysecurity.gov.uk by 17:00 on 25 June 2026.
