In March 2026, the Department issued a Government Response to its consultation on the post-2025 smart metering policy framework post 2025. The original consultation and the Government response can be found here. The changes that were introduced by the framework are expected to become effective in mid-May 2026.
DESNZ is now consulting on minor, technical changes to the SEC to require the DCC to share with energy suppliers existing information on specific cohorts of smart meters where the DCC’s 2G/3G communications services are coming to an end, and to require the DCC to engage industry on this information.
The changes also propose to streamline the process of alleviating the requirement on the DCC to send service messages to smart metering systems for which the DCC’s 2G/3G communication services have ended.
The consultation and associated legal drafting can be seen here. We invite responses to the consultation via smartmetering@energysecurity.gov.uk by 17.00 on 24 June 2026.
